Subqueries: a query inside a query

A subquery is a SELECT nested inside another query. Use one when the value you need to filter by is itself the result of a query.

A subquery that returns a list

Find customers who have a refunded order. The inner query returns the customer ids with a refund. The outer query uses that list with IN.

Customers who have at least one refunded order.

A subquery that returns one number

A subquery that returns a single value can sit anywhere a value can. Here it computes the average price once, so you can compare each product to it.

A subquery compared with = must return exactly one value. If it returns several rows, the query errors. When the inner query can return a list, switch from = to IN.

Your subquery returns several rows. Which operator should the outer query use?

  • IN, which matches against a list of values
  • =, which still works with many rows
  • LIKE, to pattern match the rows
= expects a single value. A subquery that returns several rows needs IN, which checks membership in the whole list.
